On the 61st Anniversary of the Erenköy Resistance, We Commemorate Our Martyred Heroes with Respect, Gratitude, and Mercy

The Erenköy Resistance of 8 August 1964, one of the turning points in the Turkish Cypriot people’s struggle for existence, is etched into history as a result of the clashes between Turkish Cypriots affiliated with the Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT) and Greek Cypriots affiliated with the National Guard (MMO) in the Erenköy (Kokkina) region of Cyprus.
This honorable resistance demonstrated to the world the Turkish Cypriot people’s love for their homeland, their ideal of freedom, and their unwavering determination. The heroic struggle of Turkish Cypriot university students who came from Turkey standing shoulder to shoulder with local fighters became an exceptional symbol of our people’s sacrifice, unity, and solidarity. The Erenköy Resistance is not merely a military confrontation; it is a symbol of sacrifice, faith, unity, and the spirit of resistance—an enduring testament to the Turkish Cypriot people’s belief in freedom, independence, and sovereignty.
As the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council (YÖDAK), on this meaningful day, we respectfully commemorate our heroic martyrs who gave their lives for the cause of freedom, and we extend our deepest gratitude to our veterans.
Thus, we once again honor, with mercy and respect, all our martyrs—foremost among them those of the Erenköy Resistance—and express our heartfelt appreciation to our veterans.
